“Now at peace with Christ.”

Holiness leaves behind an enduring legacy of faith, service, and profound compassion for all, particularly those marginalized or suffering the devastating consequences of conflict.
The Pontiff held a deep concern for the Syrian people. Throughout their struggle for freedom from Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Pope Francis consistently raised his voice in their defense. Notably, in a March 2022 letter addressed to a gathering of Catholic leaders in Damascus, Pope Francis affirmed:
“You are not forgotten; the Church remains particularly concerned for your welfare, for you are the protagonists of the mission of Jesus in this land.”
Following the potential fall of Assad, the Pope issued a statement advocating for the reconstruction of “a peaceful country,” where prosperity is ensured “by all its components while respecting freedom, the dignity of the human person, and diversity.”
He further emphasized the critical need to draft a new constitution and expressed his hope for the lifting of restrictions that “have driven Syrians into poverty and encouraged dramatic emigration.” He also reassured that the Catholic Church “will make every effort to help in every possible way the rebirth of noble Syria.”
Syrian Christians USA is deeply heartbroken by the passing of Pope Francis. Yet, we are comforted knowing that he leaves behind a Church that continues to care for us, and we remain eternally grateful for his impactful legacy.
